Banaras Hindu University gets UPE status


Varanasi, January 4, 2012: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) the University with Potential of Excellence (UPE) status.

In a letter to BHU vice-chancellor Professor Lalji Singh the UGC conveyed this decision. 
A total of 31 universities had sent their proposal to the UGC staking the claim for UPE status. The Standing Committee of UGC short-listed 10 universities, out of which six got the UPE status.
Under the proposal BHU will get grant of around Rs 50 crore for the next five years.

BHU vice-chancellor Professor Lalji Singh along with his team visited Delhi and presented the proposal before the Standing Committee of UGC on December 7 last.

The proposal focused two areas (1) Advanced functional materials  (Studies on energy materials, multiferroics and advanced polymers: 7.5 crores) (2) Genomics and Proteomics (Characterization of risk factors/diagnostic markers in multifactorial/infectious diseases and genomics of biotic stress tolerance: 7.5 Crores).
The university will also get Rs12 crore to establish creation of stem cell, bone marrow transplant facility in the SS hospital.
