NCC cadets take out anti-tobacco rally in BHU



NCC cadets of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) took out anti-tobacco rally on the university campus in Varanasi on May 30, 2011. BHU vice-chancellor Professor DP Singh flagged off the rally. Professor Singh also joined the rally to make the students aware about the ill effects of tobacco products.

BHU launches Dental mobile clinic






Banaras Hindu University vice-chancellor Professor DP Singh inaugurated mobile dental clinic for community service and Dental Science extension building on the university campus in Varanasi on May 25, 2011. The high-tech van is equipped with four dental chairs, X-ray machine and other necessary equipments and gadgets. Professor D Mazumdar, president, Dental Council of India, was present on the occasion.

Faculty of Veterinary Sciences in BHU soon




A national workshop and brainstorming meeting for the creation of Faculty of Veterinary Science in Banaras Hindu University (BHU) was held in the committee hall of the Institute of Agricultural Sciences on May 23, 2011. BHU Vice Chancellor Professor Dhirendra Pal Singh presided over the meeting.

BHU celebrates World Biodiversity Day



Banaras Hindu University (BHU) celebrated World Biodiversity Day on May 22, 2011. A function was organiased at the Botany Department to celebrate the occasion. BHU vice-chancellor Professor DP Singh and other faculty members planted saplings. The United Nations proclaimed May 22 as the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

57th Orientation Course begins at UGC Academic Staff College in BHU



The 57th Orientation Course began at the UGC Academic Staff College in Banaras Hindu University on May 21, 2011. Former Judge of Allahabad High Court Justice Giridhar Malviya inaugurated the course. BHU Vice-Chancellor Professor DP Singh presided over the function. Addressing the opening function, Professor Singh said the staff college would soon start a short term course on value based education for academic administrators. Professor Anand Vardhan Sharma, Director, UGC Academic Staff College, welcomed the guests while Dr SK Tiwari proposed a vote of thanks.

BT Brinjal is safe, says Ayyappan




Director General of Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR), Dr S Ayyappan called on the Banaras Hindu University vice-chancellor Professor DP Singh at VC Lodge in Varanasi on May 15, 2011. They discussed on agricultural education, research and mutual cooperation between ICAR and BHU in the developmental activities.

Later, talking to reporters Dr Ayyappan said BT Brinjal was safe and there was no need to harbour undue fear on the issue. He said the biggest issue in the agriculture sector was climate change and three was urgent need to think on soil and water conservation.

Painting exhibition 'Vision: Earth 2021' begins in BHU



Banaras Hindu University (BHU) vice-chancellor Professor Dhirendra Pal Singh inaugurated a painting exhibition " Vision: Earth 2021" at the Faculty of Visual Arts in Varanasi on May 13, 2011. About 250 paintings and posters made by the students drawn from different schools of Varanasi were displayed in the exhibition. The paintings focussed on global warming, climactic changes and protection of environment drew huge applauds from visitors. Professor RP Singh, director, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, BHU, was the guest of honour at the opening function.

Protecting the environment, the BHU V-C way



Banaras Hindu University (BHU) vice-chancellor Professor DP Singh rode bicycle to reach his office on the university campus in Varanasi on April 30, 2011. Dr Singh, a renowned environmentalist, has made it a ritual to use bicycle on the last working day of each month to perform his official work. He also undertook a herculean task to make the university environment friendly.

Seminar on 'Role of Higher Education in Disaster Management in India' held in BHU



Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development (IESD) of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) organized a national seminar on “Role of Higher Education in Disaster Management in India" at Uduppa Hall in Varanasi on April 29, 2011. Former vice-chancellor of HNB Garhwal University Professor Surendra Pratap Singh was the chief guest. BHU vice-chancellor Professor DP Singh presided over the seminar. Dr Alok Mukherjee, Dr VK Verma (both from IIT Delhi), Dr SK Das, Dr KK Singh and Dr JB Singh (all from Earth Science Department, Government of India) delivered lectures on the issue.

Foundation stones laid for 5 new buildings in BHU



Banaras Hindu University (BHU) vice-chancellor Professor Dhirendra Pal Singh laid the foundation stones of five new buildings on the university campus in Varanasi on April 28, 2011. Earlier, Professor Singh performed Pujan and Hawan under Vedic rituals. The new under construction buildings are Pragya Kunj women’s hostel at Mahila Mahvidyalaya, Health Centre for employees at Jodhpur Colony, Community Centre at Jodhpur Colony, Examination Complex and Married Hostel at Kabir Colony.
