District election officer AK Upadhyay handed over the certificate to victorious Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Annapurna Singh (left), who won Varanasi seat of Local Bodies for Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (Vidhan Parishad) on January 13, 2010.Annapurna Singh is the wife of mafia don Brijesh Singh and her victory was one-sided as she secured more than two thirds votes winning the MLC seat just after counting of first priority votes.
Out of three candidates, Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Jai Prakash Yadav finished second. Two major national parties—Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had not fielded their candidates though for last two times the seat was represented by BJP leader Udai Nath Singh alias Chulbul Singh, elder brother of Brijesh Singh. This time Chulbul denied to contest due to health problem.
