UP Legislative Council polls peaceful




The elections to the 36 seats of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council recorded a turnout of more than 95 per cent and it passed off peacefully on January 7, 2010.
As many as 193 candidates contested for the 36 Legislative Council seats.

In these elections, the voters are the members of different local bodies, including Panchayat Pradhan and members of Block Development Councils, Nagarpalika/ Nagar Panchayat/ Nagar Nigam and cantonment boards.

Ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) had fielded 36 candidates and the Samajwadi Party (SP) was contesting on 33 seats. The Congress and BJP have fielded 22 and 23 candidates respectively.
BSP had fielded Don Brijesh Singh's wife Annapurna Singh from Chandauli-Varanasi seat in the council polls.
