Training on quality production of bio-agents and usage in the fields organised

Varanasi, November 8, 2009:

A three-day training cum demonstration programme on “Quality control and use of bio-agents” was organsied at the conference hall of the Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University from November 6 to 8.

The program was aimed at providing training to the officials of the Uttar Pradesh State Department of Agriculture for improving their working skill, knowledge and efficiency on different kinds of bio-agents being produced and sold in the market so that only safe and efficient commercial products could reach the farmers.

Adesh Kumar Vishnoi, Joint Director Agriculture and Director, Macromode of Agriculture Project, Government of UP inaugurated the training programme on November 6. Dr DD Shukla, former scientist, CSIRO, Australia was present as guest of honour. Prof Shiv Raj Singh, Director, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Prof Ramesh Chand and Prof H B Singh, Coordinator, Macromode Project attended the inaugural ceremony.

On the second day, eminent scientists of the Institute of Agricultural Sciences Prof HB Singh, Prof Asha Sinha, Prof Paras Nath and Prof PS Singh introduced the officials with the trends in the quality control of Trichoderma, Beauveria, Bacillus, Pseudomonas and nematode bio-agents products.

Dr BK Tyagi, former Director presided over the valedictory function. Prof SR Singh, Director of Institute of Agricultural Sciences, BHU was the guest of honour. On the occasion chief guest Dr Tyagi explained how training on the quality-based production of Trichoderma and other bio-agents were important for the officials, who had been regularly monitoring the commercial product in the benefit of farmers.

Polland Ambassador Ktodkowski meets BHU vice-chancellor

Varanasi, November 4, 2009: Ambassador of the Republic of Poland Prof. Piotr Ktodkowski called on Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Vice-Chancellor Prof. DP Singh at Vice Chancellor Lodge on Wednesday.

The duo discussed various issues regarding possible collaboration of BHU and Poland Prof. Ktodkowski said that the MoUs would be signed by the rectors of the Polish Universities. “But I am going to recommend important areas of collaboration”, he said.

Prof. Kamal Sheel said that a MoU was signed about seven-year ago between BHU and cultural division of Poland Embassy to provide teacher for one year diploma course in Polish language. The course is already in the BHU curriculum.

He said BHU want to start two year course in Polish language if Poland signs MoU to provide teachers as was done for one year course.

The issues regarding sustainable development and environment protection, peace, yoga, Indian and Polish culture and other areas of mutual interest were also discussed. It was surprising to note that in half of the meeting Polish Ambassador spoke in Hindi and he also discussed a lot about Indian heritage and Indian gurus.

Prof. Ktodkowski was accompanied by Ms. Krystyma Olszewsha first Secretary (Political). The meeting was also attended by the Rector, Chairman, International Center, Chairman, PPP Cell, Dean Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Prof. Priyankar Upadhyay and Prof. Anju Saran Upadhyay.

Ganga ghats come alive on Dev Deepawali

Rajendra Prasad and adjoining ghats lighted with 'diyas' (earthen lamps) on auspicious occasion of Dev Deepawali in Varanasi on November 2, 2009 evening.

Dev Deepawali is celebrated on the occasion of Kartik Poornima when the ghats of Varanasi come alive with thousands of Diyas (earthen lamps). Dev Deepawali is celebrated on the fifteenth day of Deepawali which is known as Kartik Purnima.

It is believed that Lord Shiva annihilated demon Tripurasura on this day. Therefore the day is also known as Tripura Purnima.

Lakhs take holy dip on Kartik Purnima

Thousands take holy dip in Ganga on the occasion of Kartik Purnima in Varanasi on November 2, 2009. Devotees assembled on the Ganga ghats since Sunday night for taking a bath in Ganga.
