Rajendra Prasad and adjoining ghats lighted with 'diyas' (earthen lamps) on auspicious occasion of Dev Deepawali in Varanasi on November 2, 2009 evening.Dev Deepawali is celebrated on the occasion of Kartik Poornima when the ghats of Varanasi come alive with thousands of Diyas (earthen lamps). Dev Deepawali is celebrated on the fifteenth day of Deepawali which is known as Kartik Purnima.
It is believed that Lord Shiva annihilated demon Tripurasura on this day. Therefore the day is also known as Tripura Purnima.
