Karan Singh inaugurates BHU Alumni meet





Banaras Hindu University (BHU) chancellor Dr Karan Singh inaugurated the BHU Alumni Meet 2010 at Swatantrata Bhavan on December 25, 2010. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Singh said the university would celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya in a grand manner.

He said a committee headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had been formed to celebrate the 150th year of Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya's birth anniversary. Justice Giridhar Malviya and BHU vice-chancellor Professor DP Singh would be the members of the committee, he added.

Dr Karan Singh felicitated BHU alumni, who excelled in different fields world-wide.

On the occasion a fabulous exhibition had been organized in which all the faculties and auxiliary units of the university displayed their achievements.

A seminar on “Higher Education and Sustainable Development: Emerging Challenges and Mahamana’s Vision” had also organized. Some of the important speakers were: Dr. Kiran Chhokar (Director, CEE, Ahmedabad), Dr. Pritam Singh (Ex. Director, I.I.M., Lucknow), Presently with MDI, Gurgaon, Dr. J.S. Yadav (Director, I.I.C.T., Hyderabad), Dr. Nikesh Arora, President (Global Cells Operations and Business Development), Google, U.S.A. Prof. A.N. Rai (Vice-Chancellor, NEHU, Shillong) and Prof. Hridaya Ranjan Sharma.

Seventeen alumni were awarded with ‘Distinguished Alumnus Award’. The awardees were Nikesh Arora, Senior Vice President Google & President Global Sales Operations and Business Development, USA; Dr. G. Malkondaiah, Director, Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory, Hyderabad; Padmabhushan Professor N. Rajam, Ex-Dean, Faculty of Performing Arts, BHU; Dr. Prithvish Nag, Director, National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organization, Kolkata; T.R. Prasad, Ex-Cabinet Secretary, Government of India and Ex-Member 12th Finance Commission; Tapas Chakravorty, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, DQ Entertainment Ltd.; Padmabhushan Satyavrata Shastri, Ex-Vice Chancellor, Jagannath Sanskrit University, Puri, Orissa; Umesh Kumar, Director General, Anti-Corruption Bureau, Andhra Pradesh; Dr. J.S. Yadava, Director, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad; Dr. R.P. Singh, Ex Chairman-cum-Managing Director, Power Grid Corporation, Dr. N.N. Meanwhile, 'UNESCO Chair for Peace and Intercultural Understanding’ has been established in Banaras Hindu University. Now the Banaras Hindu University has become the first South-Asian university, where UNESCO Chair for Peace and international understanding has been established. Dr Karan Singh inaugurated the chair.
